TheZeal.co.nz is an independent news, analysis and commentary publication based in New Zealand, with a strong international focus and dedicated coverage of New Zealand affairs.

We cover international affairs and security, politics, business and financial markets, New Zealand affairs, culture and entertainment, with an emphasis on explaining not only what happened, but why it matters.

Our Purpose

The internet does not need another website rewriting the same headline ten different ways.

TheZeal exists to publish news, analysis and commentary that gives readers something useful: clearer explanations, relevant context, independent judgement and, where appropriate, a willingness to question the prevailing narrative.

From New Zealand affairs to international politics, security, financial markets and culture, our aim is to understand the larger story rather than simply repeat the headline.

We write for readers first.

What We Publish

TheZeal publishes news reporting, analysis, commentary, reviews and explanatory journalism.

Some articles primarily report established facts and developments, while others provide analysis, argument, commentary or reviews. Writers may reach conclusions and express a point of view, but the same expectation of factual accuracy applies throughout.

We aim to make the distinction between reporting, analysis, commentary and reviews clear to readers.

Editorial Standards

Accuracy, context and fair attribution are central to our editorial standards.

TheZeal uses primary sources wherever practical, including government publications, legislation, official statements, regulatory filings, company announcements, court documents, statistical agencies and international organisations.

We also draw on reputable news organisations, specialist publications, research organisations and other credible sources when reporting or analysing events.

Where facts are disputed, uncertain or based on the claims of an interested party, we aim to make that clear rather than presenting an allegation as an established fact.

Where important context could materially change the meaning of a story, we try to include it.

Headlines, subtitles, images and captions should accurately reflect the substance of the article and should not intentionally mislead readers for the sake of attention or traffic.

Ownership, Funding and Editorial Independence

TheZeal is independently and privately owned and operated from New Zealand. It is not a subsidiary or publication of a larger media company or publishing network.

TheZeal receives no funding from the New Zealand Government or any other government and is not owned by, operated by or affiliated with any political party or political organisation.

The publication aims to support its journalism through advertising, memberships and voluntary donations.

Advertisers, members and donors do not receive editorial control over TheZeal's reporting, commentary or conclusions.

Our writers are free to question governments, political parties, companies, institutions and prevailing opinions regardless of which side of politics or public debate they come from.

Commentary published on TheZeal may be opinionated. That is intentional. Independence does not require an absence of opinions; it requires honesty about the difference between opinion and fact.

Sponsored, paid, affiliate or otherwise commercially influenced material will be clearly identified if such material is published.

Our Authors and Bylines

Articles published by TheZeal carry a byline identifying the individual author or publication byline responsible for the work.

Current individual authors include Marilyn Marple, Lipschitz Live and Quinn Archer. Individual author pages provide further information about each writer, their work and the subjects they cover.

Some articles are published under the byline TheZeal.

TheZeal is a publication byline rather than an individual person. It is used for articles produced on behalf of TheZeal.co.nz, including work that may involve research, writing or editing by more than one contributor and where attribution to a single individual would not accurately describe how the article was produced.

TheZeal should therefore be understood as the editorial voice of the publication.

Research, Editing and AI-Assisted Tools

TheZeal uses modern digital tools as part of the research, writing and publishing process.

This may include AI-assisted tools for research support, organising and analysing information, drafting, editing, language checking, transcription, and developing illustrative concepts or images.

AI is not treated as an author. Editorial responsibility remains with the named author or with TheZeal when the publication itself is credited.

Articles are reviewed before publication. AI-assisted tools support the editorial process but do not replace source verification, editorial judgement or responsibility for what we publish.

Corrections and Updates

Accuracy matters more than pretending mistakes never happen.

If TheZeal discovers that a published article contains a substantive factual error, we will correct it.

Articles may also be updated when significant new information becomes available, additional context is required or a developing story changes materially after publication.

Minor spelling, grammar, formatting and stylistic changes may be made without a correction notice.

Where a substantive correction changes an important factual claim, we aim to identify what was corrected and, where appropriate, when the correction was made.

Sources, Attribution and Images

TheZeal aims to distinguish clearly between our own work and material originating elsewhere.

Quotes, reporting, photographs, video, data and other third-party material are attributed where appropriate.

When another news organisation or journalist has broken a story that forms an important basis for our reporting, we aim to credit the original source rather than presenting that reporting as our own.

Links to primary documents and other useful source material may also be included where they help readers verify or better understand a story.

TheZeal uses photographs, supplied material, video stills, screenshots, illustrations and AI-generated imagery where appropriate.

Illustrations, AI-generated images and other representational imagery are identified where appropriate and are not presented as documentary photographs of events they do not depict.

Image captions are used where appropriate to explain what an image depicts and, where relevant, identify its source.
