Avengers: Doomsday Breaks Australian Presale Record
Marvel Blockbuster Passes AUD$1 Million in Presales
Avengers: Doomsday has passed AUD$1 million in Australian ticket presales within its first 24 hours, giving Marvel Studios an unusually early indication of just how much demand there is for its next Avengers film.
According to Disney, the result was the biggest opening day for movie ticket presales in Australia this year and the strongest 24-hour presale launch in the country in five years. Disney says the result also puts Doomsday ahead of recent major releases including The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Marvel is wasting no time building momentum. Tickets went on sale alongside the theatrical return of Avengers: Endgame, which has been re-released as Avengers: Endgame Encore as part of the promotional campaign for Doomsday.
The 2019 blockbuster returned to Australian and New Zealand cinemas on September 24, ahead of its official U.S. re-release on September 25. Disney says the Australian re-release debuted at No. 1, although an Australian gross was not included in the company’s announcement.
Endgame Encore is more than a straightforward re-run. Marvel says the presentation includes an exclusive look at Doomsday, while audiences seeing the film in IMAX or Infinity Vision-certified auditoriums receive an additional sneak peek.
Australian promotional material has also advertised new footage and additional post-credit material, while the Australian Classification Board lists modified versions of the film containing extra introductory and post-credit footage.
The re-release is also screening across New Zealand, with HOYTS, Event Cinemas and Reading Cinemas all advertising sessions. Tickets for Doomsday are already on sale locally, including advance screenings on December 16 before its general New Zealand release on December 17. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film also opens in Australia on December 17 and in the United States on December 18.
For Marvel, that's no small thing. The Australian numbers provide a measurable sign of demand nearly three months before release. Whatever the wider debate over superhero fatigue, Australians are already putting money on the table for another Avengers outing, and doing so well ahead of opening night.
