TheZealNZ Caught in X’s Suspension Loop
Conflicting Reviews Leave the Account Locked Out
TheZeal’s X account has been suspended three times in little over a week, despite X Support twice reviewing the account and explicitly finding no violation.
TheZeal’s account on X, @TheZealNZ, is currently suspended after a confusing series of enforcement decisions that has seen the account repeatedly suspended, reviewed, restored and then suspended again.
The situation began on 23 August 2026, when X notified TheZeal that the account had been suspended for allegedly violating its rules against “inauthentic behaviors”.
X said the account had been “reported” and stated that users may not engage in inauthentic activity that undermines the integrity of the platform.
TheZeal appealed the suspension.
Later that same day, X Support responded with a very different conclusion.
“Our support team has determined there was no violation and has restored your account to full functionality.”
The account was restored.
However, less than a day later, on 24 August, TheZealNZ was suspended again for exactly the same alleged violation: inauthentic behaviour.
Further appeals followed.
On 26 August and again on 29 August, X Support said it had determined that a violation had occurred and declined to overturn the suspension.
Those messages instructed TheZeal to log into the account and complete “on-screen instructions” in order to restore functionality.
No such instructions were visible when the account was accessed.
Then, on 31 August, the position changed again.
X Support reviewed the account and once more concluded:
“Our support team has determined there was no violation and has restored your account to full functionality.”
TheZealNZ was reinstated for the second time.
Only a few hours later, however, X suspended the account again, once more citing its rules against inauthentic behaviour.
On 1 September, another appeal was rejected.
The result is an unusual sequence of conflicting decisions:
23 August: Suspended for alleged inauthentic behaviour.
23 August: Reviewed, found to have committed no violation, and reinstated.
24 August: Suspended again for the same alleged violation.
26 August: Appeal rejected.
29 August: Appeal rejected.
31 August: Reviewed again, found to have committed no violation, and reinstated.
31 August: Suspended again only hours later.
1 September: Appeal rejected again.
What Is TheZeal Accused Of Doing?
That remains unclear.
X has repeatedly referred to “inauthentic behaviors”, but has not identified a particular post, login, interaction, piece of automation or other activity that allegedly breached its rules.
TheZealNZ is the official social-media account of thezeal.co.nz, a New Zealand news and commentary website.
The account has not used bots or unauthorised automation, purchased engagement, artificially amplified posts, impersonated another person or organisation, or knowingly participated in coordinated platform manipulation.
TheZeal has repeatedly asked X to identify the specific activity that resulted in the account being classified as inauthentic, but no detailed explanation has been provided.
Was The Account Reported By Someone?
X’s suspension emails state that TheZealNZ “was reported”, but that wording does not make clear whether the suspensions resulted from reports submitted by other X users, automated detection systems, or some combination of the two.
That distinction matters.
The fact that X Support has twice manually reviewed the account and explicitly concluded that there was no violation, only for the account to be suspended again shortly afterwards, raises an obvious question about whether some recurring signal is repeatedly triggering enforcement.
At this stage, however, TheZeal cannot say that an automated system is responsible. X has not provided enough information to establish what is causing the repeated suspensions.
It is equally impossible to determine from the emails whether one or more users have repeatedly reported the account.
A Frustrating Cycle
The most concerning aspect of the situation is not simply that TheZealNZ has been suspended.
Platforms are entitled to enforce their rules, and accounts that genuinely breach those rules should expect consequences.
The problem is the contradictory nature of the decisions.
On two separate occasions, X Support reviewed TheZealNZ and told TheZeal in writing that no violation had occurred.
On both occasions, the account was subsequently suspended again for the same alleged offence.
If TheZealNZ is doing something that violates X’s rules, TheZeal would like to know what that activity is so it can be corrected.
If it is not violating the rules, the repeated suspension of an account that X’s own reviewers have twice cleared needs to be resolved.
TheZeal has therefore asked X for another human review and for clarification about whether the repeated suspensions are being triggered by user reports or by X’s own enforcement systems.
For now, @TheZealNZ remains suspended.
TheZeal will continue publishing at thezeal.co.nz regardless of the outcome.
