Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed its place as the highest-grossing movie of all time, overtaking James Cameron's Avatar following the success of its Encore theatrical re-release.
Box Office Mojo now puts Avengers: Endgame at US$2.9257 billion worldwide, narrowly ahead of Avatar at US$2.9237 billion.
The margin is tiny for two films that have generated almost US$6 billion between them. The record is based on worldwide box-office revenue without adjusting for inflation.
Avengers: Endgame Encore has added more than US$126 million worldwide since returning to cinemas in September, including approximately US$36.3 million domestically and US$90 million internationally.
The result continues a box-office rivalry stretching back seven years. Endgame originally overtook Avatar during its 2019 theatrical run, only for Cameron's film to regain the record following a re-release in China in 2021.
Disney and Marvel brought Endgame back to cinemas ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, with the Encore edition including exclusive new footage directly connecting the 2019 film to Marvel's next Avengers instalment.
TheZeal previously reported that the Encore release opened with an estimated US$86 million worldwide. After its second weekend, the re-release carried the film past the one target that remained: Avatar.
Whichever film eventually finishes on top, both now sit under Disney's corporate umbrella. The House of Mouse acquired 21st Century Fox's film and entertainment assets, including 20th Century Fox, in March 2019, bringing the studio behind Avatar into the company.
